Walk and Talk Therapy: A Different Way to Experience Therapy

When many people imagine therapy, they picture two chairs in a quiet office. For some, that setting feels grounding and supportive.

At the same time, therapy does not always need to happen within four walls.

Walk and talk therapy is an approach that combines conversation with gentle movement outdoors. Instead of sitting across from one another in an office, therapist and client walk together in a nearby park or natural space while talking.

For some people, this shift in environment can make therapy feel more relaxed and accessible.

Why Movement Can Support Emotional Processing

Our emotional experiences are not only mental — they are also physical.

Walking activates the body in subtle ways that can support reflection and emotional regulation. Many people notice that difficult conversations feel easier when they are moving rather than sitting face-to-face.

The rhythm of walking can also create a natural flow to conversation. Pauses and moments of silence often feel less awkward, allowing thoughts and feelings to emerge more gradually.

Being outdoors can also have a calming effect on the nervous system. Natural environments often slow the pace of interaction and invite a different kind of awareness.

Who Walk and Talk Therapy Can Help

Walk and talk therapy is not necessarily the right format for everyone. Some people prefer the privacy and stillness of a traditional therapy office.

However, outdoor therapy can feel particularly supportive for individuals who:

  • feel restless or constrained in traditional therapy settings

  • process thoughts more easily through movement

  • enjoy spending time outdoors

  • feel more comfortable speaking side-by-side rather than face-to-face

People working through anxiety, stress, life transitions, or relational patterns sometimes find that walking conversations create space for a different kind of reflection.

Walk and Talk Therapy in Burlington

Burlington offers many peaceful outdoor spaces that can support this type of therapeutic work. Quiet trails, waterfront paths, and green spaces provide a natural setting for conversation and reflection.

During walk and talk therapy sessions, we move at a comfortable pace while focusing on the topics that matter most to you.

Confidentiality, safety, and client comfort always guide the process. If outdoor therapy ever feels uncomfortable, sessions can easily transition back to an in-office format.

A Flexible Approach to Therapy

Some clients choose to alternate between walk and talk therapy and traditional in-person sessions. Others prefer outdoor sessions as their primary format.

Therapy tends to be most effective when it adapts to the needs of the person receiving it.

At Soul Seat Psychotherapy, I offer walk and talk therapy in Burlington and Oakville, in-person therapy sessions, and virtual therapy across Ontario.

If you’re curious about whether outdoor therapy might feel like a good fit, you’re welcome to book a free 20-minute consultation to learn more.

Sometimes meaningful conversations unfold most naturally when we are simply walking side by side.
